John Wilson
Wild Wings

Biography

Wilson was born in Sisseton, South Dakota. He has sketched since childhood. While in the Air Force he used painting as a way to fill his free time. Back in civilian life, he worked 25 years for Stein Sign in Watertown, SD. He won an international award for sign display. "Pleasure painting" was done at night and on weekends. He also started painting murals on banks, restaurants, etc. His only formal art training was a short course in architectural drafting.

In 1976 he started to paint wildlife. His first illustration placed second in the SD Migratory Waterfowl competition.
His honors include:
*1979 - SD pheasant
*1981 - SD pheasant
*1981 - FEDERAL WATERFOWL
*1986 - SD pheasant
*1986 - SD waterfowl
*1990 - SD habitat
*1990 - SC duck
*1992 - SD duck

His advice to anyone interested in an art career: "Take art classes and art school - all my techniques have been learned by trial and error - a good art school would have eliminated a lot of frustration."

His goals for the future: one painting he is entirely satisfied with.   "That's what keeps you painting. You always feel you are going to paint the perfect picture."
