Max Weber (1881-1961)
Carol Jackson

Weber, a student of Matisse, assisted Stieglitz as guide in Paris 1904-1911 (four times).

His knowledge of art was equaled in America only by that of Arthur B. Davies.  Weber studied with Arthur Wesley Dow, who taught that art resides in harmonious spacing.

"There can be no color without there being a form, in space and in light with substance and weight, to hold the color. I prefer a form, even if it is in black and white, rather than a tache of formless color." - Weber

Weber wandered through the Louvre and studied oriental art at Musee Guimet; he trained his eye to detect qualities held in common by Eastern and Western art, by old masters, primitive artists and decorative artists.

In New York he visited the Museum of Natural History wher he  found Chinese dolls, Hopi Katchina images, Indian quilts and blankets.  living at the edge of poverty, he sometimes camped out at the 291.

He tried everything. "All the moderns seem to be here," one critic wrote, "but where are the Webers?"

His strength was his knowledge of art.  His weakness was his knowledge of art.
